4000 MILES later…
There are over 4000 miles between India and the U.K and we have travelled some distance to be where we are today. A hybrid of cultures, interwoven with our native Brits, calls for a celebration of how South Asians contributed to the makings of Britain. A look to the past with a vision to the future, ‘4000 Miles’ taps into a feminist consciousness, unravelling identities of what makes us British-Asian.
Founded by Meena Bhella, ‘4000 Miles’ discovers the women of our future. By using THE SPACE, we can educate and be more informing of how South Asians are viewed and represented in the Media and their communities.
Together we can get perspectives of different voices and use it to empower a solution.
IT ALL STARTED WHEN…
‘I had the idea for a while to celebrate British Asian culture in a fresh way, a way that most people like myself may not have been used to seeing. A little bit of nostalgia, a little bit of humour, whilst being sensitive to real issues. It isn’t about ‘Brown’ vs ‘White’, it’s about celebrating our differences.
I was keen to use my background of working in fashion into the mix. The rich history of our culture, our dress, our style to the food we eat, was something I would say for most, ashamed to embrace. Being a woman, I am aware of the cultural woes that are put upon us, so it was a no-brainer to use these ideas as a celebration of ‘South Asian woman hood’.
